The electric car (EV) is a motor vehicle that runs on an external source of electrical energy rather than fuel. The electricity may come from the local power grid or be generated onboard by an internal combustion engine converted to run on reclaimed kerosene, natural gas, biodiesel, nuclear, wind turbines, solar cells, or other renewable sources. EVs result in significantly lower emissions of ozone precursors, particulate matter, and greenhouse gases than gasoline-powered vehicles.

EVs provide instant power and are smooth, quiet, and enjoyable to drive. However, their driving range can vary widely between models, so it’s important to consider your commute distance and plan for where and how you will charge your car.

In addition to home charging, New York City is partnering with Hertz to expand access to public charging stations at more than 120 locations throughout the five boroughs. bp is also investing in large-scale, high-speed charging hubs, called gigahubs, to serve rideshare drivers, Hertz customers, and other EV owners at airports, hotels, and other high-demand destinations.
