Electric City Vehicles Power Our Cars, Trucks and Buses
The electric vehicles (EV) that power our cars, trucks and buses can be powered by a variety of sources, including fossil fuels, wind, solar, nuclear and hydroelectricity. EVs result in far lower emissions of ozone precursors, particulate matter and greenhouse gases compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
EV drivers can use the same 120-volt outlets used for laundry or electric appliances at home to charge their vehicle (Level 1 charging), or they can install a 240-volt charger that increases the speed of charge to as fast as 350 kilowatts (Level 2 charging). EVs can also be charged at public parking garages and lots, or at work in commercial spaces such as office buildings, restaurants and warehouses.
Many consumers look first at an EV’s EPA-rated range when considering the purchase of an electric car or truck. But the energy efficiency of an EV is just as important to consider, and it’s worth comparing an EV’s MPGe rating with other models on your shopping list, just like you would compare the gas mileage ratings of conventional cars.
NRDC is leading a national effort to stretch federal investments in EVs, supporting state and local initiatives that drive EV manufacturing, expand charging networks, and ensure equitable access to clean transportation for the communities most harmed by pollution. The campaign is called Energize! and will launch this May. It will mobilize 500 stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers and fleets, utilities, EV charging providers, agribusinesses, philanthropies, cities, states, and other governments to invest in and accelerate the EV industry.
