An electric-car battery stores electricity in a pack that is located between the wheels of an automobile. When the accelerator is depressed, a motor turns a crankshaft to generate electricity that is used to propel the vehicle down the road. When the brakes are applied, regenerative braking slows and recharges the battery, lessening the use of conventional brakes. EVs also have lower emissions than gas-powered cars because they don’t require the burning of fossil fuels for driving and acceleration.

The EV market is still very young, but a growing number of companies are committing to bringing more models into it and to transitioning existing fleets to electric vehicles. Amazon, for example, has rolled out thousands of its redesigned vans to electric power and has committed to replacing all of its service trucks with them by 2030. Trane Technologies is doing the same with its fleet of more than 8,000 vehicles, including its commercial delivery vans.

Most EV shoppers fixate on an EV’s EPA-rated range, which can determine whether an electric car is right for their commute and driving habits. But it’s also worth considering the efficiency of each model on your list — in other words, how many miles it wrings out of the energy stored in its batteries. This is called a “MPGe” rating and it’s based on the same factors that determine a gasoline-powered car’s MPGe figure. A higher MPGe rating doesn’t necessarily mean a class-leading range, however.
