EVs are gaining popularity because their operating costs and environmental impact are often lower than conventional vehicles, even when considering the emissions generated during manufacturing. They also don’t produce tailpipe emissions, and their batteries can be recharged using clean energy from the grid.

The slickest entries in the market are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which use gasoline to drive their internal combustion engines but can run on electricity for some or all of their trips. The Porsche Taycan, for example, is the fastest and most efficient PHEV on the market, with its base and GTS models netting 83 MPGe combined.

Most EV owners charge their cars at home, which is convenient and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from driving. They can plug their cars into a standard 120-volt outlet or install a 240-volt charger that uses the same wiring as the appliances in their homes. If they live in an apartment or condo, they can ask their landlord if they can install a Level 2 charger for faster charging.

As the EV movement grows, more recharging options will be needed for people who don’t have their own garages. In New York City, the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability (MOS) and NYC DOT are working to build a network of charging stations with up to four DC fast chargers and two Level 2 chargers in city-owned public lots and garages. These will be available for EVs to use on a pay-per-hour basis, with a smartphone app or tap card.
