Electric Vehicles and the Electric Grid

Electric cars may have a lower price tag than traditional vehicles, but they still cost money to buy and run. EV buyers can often qualify for federal and state tax incentives that help ease initial sticker shock. And if they charge their cars at home on electricity that’s usually less expensive than gasoline, owners can realize significant savings over the long term.

But even though the technology is advancing rapidly, many consumers remain apprehensive about putting an electric vehicle in their driveway. They worry about refueling times, range anxiety and lack of knowledge about charging systems and maintenance requirements.

Several manufacturers have developed new EVs to try to ease these fears. They have also begun installing recharging stations, which can add as much as 250 miles of driving range in 30 minutes or less. And they have started offering extended battery warranties, such as eight years or 100,000 miles for the lithium-ion batteries used to power EVs.

Another concern is whether the electric grid can handle an influx of plug-in cars. A typical EV uses about 30 kilowatt-hours to travel 100 miles — the same amount of energy that an average American household uses in a day for appliances, lights and heating or cooling.

The influx could strain existing utility networks, particularly in states like California that have mandated the purchase of electric vehicles and are struggling to produce enough renewable energy. But utilities are working to build recharging stations and experiment with technologies such as “vehicle-to-grid” (V2G) that will allow electric cars to take on surplus power from the grid during the day and return it when demand is high.
