Electric City Vehicles (EVs)
EVs drive silently and are smoother than most gas-powered vehicles. The lack of a mechanical drivetrain also gives designers more interior room, as they don’t need to enlarge the engine bay for a transmission or gas tank.
In addition, the electric motors typically produce more instant-on torque than ICE cars, meaning they can accelerate more quickly and smoothly at lower speeds. They also don’t need to build revs to make power, and they can switch on and off as needed for optimum performance and fuel efficiency.
The Nissan Leaf is the first mass-produced, 100% electric car in history, with a top speed of over 90 mph and a driving range of up to 100 miles (160 km). It recharges to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes.
Some EVs (also called plug-in hybrids) use electricity exclusively until their battery is empty, and then switch to gasoline to extend the driving range. This approach is much cheaper than driving only on electricity, and some states offer additional EV incentives to offset the initial cost difference.
EVs can be charged at home using standard 120 V outlets or, for faster charging, a dedicated 240 V charging station or system. They can also be charged at a growing number of public stations. Unlike gasoline-powered vehicles, which often require oil and filter changes to keep them running efficiently, electric cars only need periodic inspection and maintenance to stay in good working order. Additionally, EVs are usually cheaper to operate than their ICE counterparts, since they don’t require a complex transmission or internal combustion engine and have lower energy costs per mile driven.
