Electric Vehicles Overview
The general catch-all term for electric vehicles (EVs) is “electrified cars.” But there are many types of EVs, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). HEVs use a small battery to power their motors while also using some gas to get around.
PHEVs are the newest category of EVs, and they’re also the most expensive. They are capable of driving over 40 miles on an electric charge, and they typically have a much higher MPGe rating than standard EVs.
Automotive Industry Analysts
GM, Ford and other Big Three automakers are all investing in a massive shift toward electric-powered vehicles. The companies have all committed to building new EVs, with plans to produce an entire electric vehicle line by 2035.
Ford aims to sell 600,000 EVs annually by late 2023; it is planning to launch at least 25 new EV nameplates this year. It also has a plan to build a battery-charging station in the city of Detroit that would support an additional 500,000 EVs by 2030.
As the auto industry shifts away from fossil fuels, electric vehicles will play an increasingly important role in helping to clean the nation’s electricity supply. However, EVs will require a significant investment in both infrastructure and compensation for drivers and owners. Governments may need to change incentives and taxes, while charging stations will have to be adapted to meet new requirements for charging rates and energy efficiency.
