There are a number of important things to consider when choosing an EV. First and foremost, range is a crucial factor. An EV must cover a certain distance in a given amount of time, which varies between different models. However, a large margin should be allowed between the EPA combined range rating and actual range for long trips.
Electric vehicles also reduce gas consumption and maintenance costs. Battery-powered vehicles generally require no oil changes or tune-ups and may only require wiper replacement and tire rotation. Additionally, you won’t need a gas station, as EVs can be charged at home. While most EVs are fully electric, some plug-in hybrids still use a gas engine.
Compared to their internal combustion cousins, EVs generally have more range, with some models capable of going over 200 miles between charges. However, EVs tend to consume more battery power while driving at a steady speed, such as when at highway speeds. Additionally, EVs’ air conditioning and heaters will deplete the battery, limiting the range. However, with proper charging at home, EV drivers can easily recharge their vehicles and still go on a long trip without running out of power.
Electricity demand fluctuates throughout the day and peaks in the early evening. This can overtax the power grid and force utilities to deliver more electricity than they can produce. However, California has a large capacity of power plants and is well-positioned to ramp up production when demand increases.
