The emergence of EVs as the preferred way to get around town is a revolution that could have big consequences for utilities. With millions of new cars and trucks running on electricity, utilities are retooling their grids to handle the influx.
A new kind of battery storage is emerging that could help make the electric grid work better and keep the lights on at night. This technology, called vehicle-to-grid (V2G), allows EVs to tap into surplus renewable energy production when demand is high and return the stored power to the grid as the demand goes down.
GM is getting ready for the EV boom
As the nation’s leading automaker, GM has long been a proponent of electric vehicles. It’s already produced a couple of popular EVs, including the Chevy Bolt. It’s also planning to build its first factory dedicated to EV production, in partnership with Honda.
Ford is making moves to move toward EVs too. It’s getting ready to offer a full lineup of EVs, from a compact hatchback to a full-size SUV.
GM’s shift to EVs is part of a wider move to make the company’s vehicles more fuel-efficient and reduce emissions. It’s a shift that will require changes in the company’s business model and workforce.
The transition to EVs will create a surge in demand for electricity. Utilities will need to ramp up their production to keep up. That will mean building more power plants and upgrading their transmission networks. And, in states that have adopted zero-emission vehicle mandates, it will require boosting the amount of charging infrastructure available to help a growing number of EV drivers plug their vehicles in at home.
