Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
As states, cities and businesses push for more and more people to drive electric cars, they are also putting the power grid on the line. With EVs using 30 kilowatt-hours to travel 100 miles, the grid needs to be able to handle this level of electricity demand if the vehicles are to meet their emissions goals, and be able to supply it efficiently as the number of EVs expands.
To help tackle this challenge, Earthjustice is suing the public utilities commissions in California and other states to support charging infrastructure that will relieve one of the main barriers to recharging an electric car for those who don’t own a home with a garage or driveway. Adding more public charging stations in parking garages, shopping centers and workplaces would allow all drivers to charge their EV without having to worry about running out of juice when they leave the office or at night.
Ford and GM Both Have Accelerated Their Commitment to EVs
In the past, automakers like Ford and General Motors have dabbled in electric cars but are now ramping up their commitment. GM CEO Mary Barra recently announced that GM will phase out gasoline-powered cars by 2035, and Ford has set an electric car sales goal of 50% of its total sales by 2030.
GM is creating a new business unit called GM Energy to provide electric-car charging, stationary battery storage, solar products and software applications for retail and commercial customers. This unit will expand upon the current Ultium Charge 360 product and service offering, which connects GM vehicles to seven major charger networks for consumers.
