Cars powered by electricity require less energy to move than traditional cars, making them perfect for city driving. In many cases, they can also be charged using renewable energy from solar or wind sources, making them nearly zero-emissions vehicles. Earthjustice is working across the country to bring us closer to 100% clean energy, but even if the power you use to charge your electric vehicle comes from a dirty grid, it’s still far cleaner than burning gasoline.
Some automakers, including Tesla, are aiming to sell only electric vehicles. Others, such as GM, Ford, and Toyota, have committed to electrifying most of their fleets by 2025 or 2030.
As EVs become more common, they will put pressure on the nation’s point-to-point electric grid. New York’s, for example, requires significant rebuilding or augmentation to handle 2 million new cars plugged in at the same time, says Gil Quiniones of the New York Power Authority.
Quiniones is based in a control room in East Greenbush, outside Albany, that oversees a network of transmission lines that connect upstate renewable-energy producers to the New York metropolitan area. He says the current system can’t handle the load if people charge their cars at the same time as they use lights, refrigerators, and other appliances in a big way—like at 2 pm on a hot summer day when temperatures are 96 degrees. That’s why he wants to see the power companies build a network of high-speed DC fast chargers, which can recharge a battery in about 36 minutes.
