New York City has a lot of electric cars. The five boroughs account for about a sixth of all electric vehicles in the country, but they are more prominent in affluent communities like Scarsdale, Stamford and Westport, Connecticut, as well as parts of Brooklyn and Queens. State incentives, including a $7,500 rebate for consumers and free access to car-pool lanes, have helped boost adoption.
But the high price of fully electric models—which start at around $59,000 and go up from there—has been a deterrent to many consumers. The cost is coming down as batteries become more energy-dense and lighter. Ford, for example, is partnering with a Chinese battery maker to build its own lithium-iron-phosphate plant in Michigan that will help lower production costs and allow it to qualify for the consumer tax credit.
Other companies are also committing to supporting the EV market, including Zipcar and Uber. The latter is distributing hundreds of EVs to its drivers and partners, including disadvantaged communities. Trane, which makes efficient climate-solution products for buildings and homes, is converting its service vans to all-electric models.
And car dealerships are gearing up to support the onslaught of EVs, with more than 2,300 Ford dealers pledging to be “EV certified.” That means they will invest in training salespeople and upgrading charging stations and purchasing special tools and parts. The certification process can cost up to $50,000. EVs have fewer moving parts than gas-powered cars and require less maintenance, which saves on repair bills.
