Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

The electric vehicle (EV) is driving into the mainstream. Last year, EVs accounted for about 5 percent of all new vehicles sold in the United States. This year, the figure is expected to rise to more than 6 percent, according to analysts.

Several major automakers have announced plans to produce only EVs. For example, General Motors has pledged to produce 30 plug-in models by 2025, a $27 billion investment. Other manufacturers, such as BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen, Daimler and Hyundai, have made similar commitments.

But despite the brisk sales of EVs, some car dealers are reluctant to carry them. Some say consumers aren’t interested in buying them. Others worry that EVs require more maintenance and may be less reliable than traditional vehicles.

But many dealerships are changing their tune. The National Automobile Dealers Association says that EVs can be “more profitable than their gasoline-powered counterparts.” Moreover, the association is encouraging its 17,000 members to stock and promote EVs by offering incentives. It is also partnering with Con Edison to install 120 Level 2 charging ports at curbside locations in the five boroughs. These EV chargers are open to all drivers, but priority will be given to residents of low-income and disadvantaged communities. The NADA’s efforts are being bolstered by the federal EV Infrastructure Investment Act, which extends tax credits for residential and commercial charging. In April, the Natural Resources Defense Council and a coalition of green groups—including GreenLatinos, Hip Hop Caucus, Sierra Club, Clean Energy for America, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments and Plug in America—will launch Route Zero, a nationwide campaign to expand access to EV charging in disadvantaged communities.
