How Electric Vehicles Can Help Power Electricity Grids
EVs can be more complex to own than traditional cars, with questions about where and how to charge them, whether they need regular service and those tax breaks. But dealers play a critical role in helping customers understand the differences and find what works best for them, says the head of NADA’s auto retail division.
Dedicated electric vehicles have a number of advantages over conventional gas-powered models, such as a smaller, lighter battery that can provide the same driving range on a single charge and more interior space due to lack of the bulky engine and transmission. These factors can help reduce the cost of an EV, although buyers will need to factor in installation of charging stations.
The ability to recharge an EV from the grid also provides flexibility and allows for regenerative braking, which helps reduce energy use. In the future, drivers may be able to discharge their batteries back into the grid, which can help alleviate overloaded power lines during peak hours.
Electrifying transportation is a key goal of governments, cities and corporations in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner air. Seattle, for example, aims to have nearly a third of its residents driving plug-ins by 2030. But the state needs to ensure its electrical grid can handle the extra demand, including from EVs. A recent study found that increased EV ownership has not added significantly to electricity demand, but peak charging can strain utility systems. Increasing the number of people charging their EVs during off-peak hours can ease this pressure.
