The auto industry is betting that it can solve one of the world’s biggest challenges: building a fleet of tens of millions of electric cars. It’s also investing in the batteries needed to power those vehicles.
Tesla plans to build two electric-car factories, one for its Lightning sedan in Stanton, Tennessee, and a second plant in Glendale, Kentucky, for battery production, which it plans to start in 2025. The plants will employ 6000 people, according to a report by Reuters.
Ford GM Power Manufacturing
GM plans to manufacture batteries for EVs in several locations, including its Blue Oval plant in Southfield, Michigan, which will build cells for the Chevy Bolt and other upcoming models. The company also has a battery plant in Ohio for its Volt, as well as a plan to build battery production facilities in China, where it is attempting to slash costs by using cheaper molten salt.
Electric vehicles are ideal for city driving, because they have low emissions and excellent acceleration, as well as recyclable braking systems. But they’re not as good for highway driving, where air conditioning and heat use can significantly reduce range.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) combine the flexibility of an electric vehicle with a gasoline engine that powers up when the batteries run out. These cars can travel up to 400 miles on a single charge, and many PHEVs have a long-distance rating of more than 200 miles.
