The legacy automakers are investing huge sums of money in batteries and EV technology. But it’s not certain that their investments will pay off.
Moreover, electric vehicles could create new problems for the grid if they rely heavily on charging overnight. That would strain electricity resources in places where demand fluctuates throughout the day, and utilities could face big costs to ramp up power production.
Porsche Taycan EV, Base and GTS
The slick-looking Porsche Taycan is the most efficient EV on the market, returning 83 MPGe combined in its base guise with 79 MPGe city and 88 MPGe highway. The top-of-the-line model, the GTS, offers up to 246 miles of range.
Nissan Leaf EV, RWD and available AWD
The RWD version of the Nissan Leaf has an efficiency rating of 29 kWh per 100 miles. The AWD version’s efficiency is rated at 32 kWh.
Kia EV6, Standard and Long-Range Batteries
The standard battery in the Kia EV6 offers 232 miles of range, while the Long-Range Battery increases it to 310 miles. The EPA’s average fuel economy for the EV6 is 29 mpg combined, though a more powerful battery can boost that to 33 mpg.
