EVs are mainly designed for short city distances such as school runs, shopping trips, local high street visits and work. They offer emission-free driving and a low total cost of ownership which is an attractive feature.
They are very light and small compared to conventional vehicles and use very low amounts of fuel (fuel efficiency improvements). The electric motor is much lighter than the internal combustion engine delivering the same power and requires less energy for driving.
The electricity used to recharge EVs is produced from renewable sources which produce very little greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, EVs promise to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the near future.
Despite the positive effects of using urban EVs on reducing CO2 emissions, there are certain barriers that need to be overcome before market penetration is possible. These include identifying a ready market, pricing competitively and adapting the vehicles to meet customers’ expectations.
Government incentives are an important factor in promoting the adoption of urban EVs. Some countries require a specified number of urban EVs to be deployed in public fleet operators and provide incentives to consumers who buy these cars. These incentives are most relevant in regions where oil prices are higher relative to electricity prices.
Recharging time and battery costs are another factor that need to be addressed. The development of efficient battery technology, combined with thermal management at the charging infrastructure will help to extend the battery lifetime and recharging times.
