The auto industry is shifting away from gasoline-powered vehicles. And for good reason: EVs are much more efficient, have lower operating costs, and can be charged with solar energy. And they aren’t just for the rich and famous: Every American can benefit from driving an EV.

Tesla is a leader in the market with its Tesla Model S, which returns up to 93 MPGe on the highway and 77 MPGe in the city. It’s also one of the best-equipped EVs in its price range with a standard array of features that include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen.

Ford is also leading the charge in the market with its Ford F-150 Lightning battery-electric pickup. With a 70 MPGe combined rating, it’s also one of the most efficient pickups on the market.

Honda is also making a major effort to shift to EVs, with 40 percent of its sales coming from zero-emissions cars by 2040. It is investing billions of dollars in research and development, including solid-state batteries, to make that happen.

Kia is another manufacturer that has been on the EV bandwagon for some time, with its midsize SUVs like the Niro and EV6 offering excellent range. It also has a few EV models on the road, such as the Soul EV and its more affordable sibling, the Hyundai Ioniq.

Despite the challenges, there’s no denying that EVs are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. And with new state and federal incentives, it’s only going to get easier for people to drive a clean, green vehicle.
