A few years ago, the EPA made a big push to encourage people to buy and drive electric cars. Now, a number of states and municipalities are offering a wide range of incentives that aim to make electric vehicles cheaper than their fossil-fuel-powered counterparts.
The biggest difference between electric and gas-powered vehicles is how much energy they use, and EVs with a higher MPGe rating typically use less fuel to travel the same distance. This is because a vehicle’s battery stores electricity, which can be recharged at home or on the road with a public charging station.
In addition, a growing number of utilities are working to deploy vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that allows electric vehicles to store excess renewable power generated during the day and return it to the grid when demand is high. That could help reduce utility costs, as the extra electricity is freed up for other uses.
Ford and GM both have big plans for their electric cars, and GM is making a lot of progress on its plan to phase out the company’s ICE fleet by 2035. The company has a BlueOval City plant in West Tennessee that’s accelerating production of its first-ever EV, the F-150 Lightning, and it’s bringing its GM Electric Division into the fold to support future EV manufacturing at that site.
But it’s not clear whether any of those new EVs will be built in Detroit. Despite Biden’s zeal for American-made EVs, it’s likely that most will come from elsewhere in the country.
