Electric Vehicles As Electricity Consumption Soars
When shoppers evaluate electric vehicles, the spec they fix on first is usually an EV’s EPA-rated range. That’s understandable, as it helps determine whether the car is a fit for their driving needs and habits and where charging will be available. But there are other factors to consider, such as the efficiency of an EV’s battery and the cost of refueling.
Electric cars are consuming electricity at the same rate as homes, and that growth can strain power grids during extreme weather linked to climate change such as long heat waves or devastating storms. Many utilities, including Seattle City Light, are working on ways to expand their capacity so they can handle the expected increase in EVs.
One option is to use EV batteries to serve as backup power, something that some electric car owners are already doing. The Reigards, for example, use their Tesla SUV to keep the lights on and refrigerators running during extended power outages. But they’re among only a small group of people currently doing so. Many energy and auto experts expect more people to tap their EVs’ batteries for backup power as the technology improves.
EVs also may be able to help balance the demand for electricity when it’s peaking at different times of day by serving as a market for excess renewable energy production. That’s the theory behind vehicle-to-grid technology, which would allow EVs to charge during off-peak hours and send back power to the grid when demand is high.
