Electric City Vehicles

Tesla

With a handful of exceptions, electric vehicles are more efficient than their gas-powered counterparts and offer better performance in almost every way. They have a lower price tag, are usually quieter, can be driven on public DC fast charging stations and often require less maintenance than their oil-powered cousins. They also recapture energy that would otherwise be lost during deceleration, and they can go longer between fill-ups because most EVs use standard 120 V charging outlets rather than expensive 240 V systems.

The smallest electric cars are aimed at urban commuters who can easily meet their daily driving needs by plugging in and going back home to recharge. Larger EVs can also be used as family haulers if you are willing to sacrifice some efficiency for range and cargo room.

Ford

Unlike the smart EV1 and the first generation of plug-in hybrids, which were electrified versions of conventional models, most of today’s new EVs are designed from the ground up to be electric vehicles with long ranges, optimized vehicle designs, and more value for consumers. The new EVs also feature better battery technology with lower costs and higher energy density than their predecessors.

Electricity from the grid powers these vehicles, but that power isn’t emissions-free; about 60% of California’s electricity comes from fossil fuels like coal in 2015 according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. Some EVs, like the Tesla Model S, can be charged with renewable energy from solar or wind, but even that can’t completely offset fossil-fuel-powered power plants.
