If cities and states want to reduce carbon emissions by shifting their fleets to electric cars, they need to make sure the electricity used to recharge them can handle the demand. That is a complex task since state energy resources vary considerably, and how those sources produce electricity impacts total emissions when EVs are charged.
Fortunately, many of the cars available today have ranges that can cover most commutes. And a few models can go much farther. For those with longer trips, it’s wise to consider a plug-in hybrid. These vehicles use an electric motor to run the car, but they also have traditional fuel engines that will fire up if the battery runs low.
One of the biggest benefits of EVs is that they’re easy to charge. Owners can plug their cars in overnight at home just as they do with their cell phone chargers. And many EV owners also enjoy access to convenient, publicly-owned charging stations at workplaces, hotels and other public locations.
In the future, EV owners might even be able to contribute to their community’s energy grid. This technology, called vehicle-to-grid (V2G), could let them take advantage of cheaper, renewable energy produced during the day and store it in their batteries. Then, when demand for electricity rises in the evening, their cars can help power homes and businesses again.
