Electrifying New York City is a plan that aims to make New York City a national leader in the electric vehicle (EV) transition. It calls for the installation of a 1,000 curbside charge points by 2025 and 10,000 by 2030. It also outlines eight initiatives to expand public charging.
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) is working with city, state, and federal partners to implement the EV plan. The city is installing 120 Level 2 charging ports at curbside locations across the five boroughs. These will be in place for four years as part of a demonstration project.
These chargers are a critical part of the electric vehicle transition. They can safely deliver energy from the electric grid to a vehicle’s battery. The cost of charging is competitive with the cost of gasoline for non-EVs.
These EVs can be recharged at home, at work, or at a public parking lot. Drivers can also use tap cards or a program website to pay.
The initial costs of buying an EV can be offset by state incentives and a federal tax credit. The Electrifying New York City plan also calls for the creation of an EV hub in city-owned public parking lots. The hub will feature up to four DC fast chargers.
These vehicles have a flexible charging system that allows drivers to charge overnight at home, at work, or at a public parking lot. They also have a regenerative braking system that captures energy from coasting and uses it to recharge the battery.
