For drivers who choose to make the switch to an electric vehicle, one of their first concerns will likely be figuring out how to charge their cars. Then there are questions about which public charging stations to use, the state of infrastructure in their area, and maybe even how much those EVs will cost to own and operate.

With a little digging, it’s possible to figure out the answers to all of these questions. First, it’s important to understand that a battery-powered electric car is more than just a “battery on wheels.” EVs, like plug-in hybrids, can export electricity back to the grid and help ease stress on the system at peak times of demand. EVs with more advanced systems, such as Rivian’s R1T pickup truck utility model, can even power tools and appliances at home or on the jobsite to offset energy usage that would otherwise burden the power grid.

These EVs are also more efficient than gas-powered vehicles. On average, 59-62 percent of the electrical energy that goes into an EV’s battery is converted to powering its wheels compared to 17-21 percent for a traditional gasoline engine. As the EV industry continues to grow, so does the need for the grid to accommodate them. That’s why New York City has stepped up to be a leader by committing to growing its city-operated fast charging network to 80 plugs by 2025 and equipping 20 percent of its public parking spots with Level 2 chargers by 2030.
