Electric City Vehicles Power Consumption

When deciding whether or not to make the switch to an electric vehicle, there are many things to consider beyond just EPA-rated range. How and where you charge it, when you use heating or cooling, how much accessories drain your battery – all these factors can have a significant impact on your driving experience.

The good news is that EVs are more energy-efficient than gasoline cars. They convert 59-62 percent of the electrical energy from the grid to turn the wheels, compared with just 17-21 percent in an internal combustion engine car. Needing less energy means using less fuel and saving money in the long run.

In addition, the fact that EVs produce no tailpipe emissions means they have an even lower environmental footprint than a gas-powered car, especially when powered by renewables like wind. Earthjustice attorneys are working across the country to move us closer to a 100% clean energy grid, but until we get there, EV drivers can help by practicing smart charging. That means charging in the middle of the day when energy demand is lowest, or at night when wind energy is abundant.

To learn more about the power consumption of different EV models, see our cheatsheet below, which ranks vehicles by their average kilowatt-hours per 100 miles. Click on a model to see full data.
