Electric Vehicles

Many people these days are hearing about electric vehicles (EVs). Electric vehicles aren’t as common as electric cars, but they do have their place in our current energy scenario. Electric vehicles are more fuel efficient to drive and run than their gasoline-powered cousins, which make them cost less to own, run and maintain. However, what are electric vehicles really worth? In some ways, sort of. Sometimes.

For many people today, the idea of owning and driving an electric vehicle may seem like one way to reduce expenses, but there are also other costs involved in purchasing and maintaining an electric vehicle. Gas prices have been rising; so have insurance premiums. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, electric vehicles can also be subject to more routine maintenance than gasoline-powered automobiles. What kind of maintenance and attention you’ll need to pay for an electric car depends on the manufacturer and your level of expertise.

A large part of the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle is the cost of the battery and charging system. The batteries for electric vehicles are a lot more expensive than those for most other cars. In fact, the price of an average size sedan battery is about two thousand dollars, and that doesn’t even take into account the cost of the engine! But there are ways to minimize the cost of a battery and the entire charging system for electric vehicles. Let’s look at two methods that many people swear by.

Low-priced electric vehicles can be purchased with a homemade system, or with a separate charger from a local service station. This isn’t recommended if you plan to drive more than a few hundred miles, as the system will begin to lose efficiency after this distance. If you do decide to buy a system for your vehicle, there are options. You can purchase one with a charge controller that lets you set the maximum amount of time that your battery will charge before it needs recharging. You can also purchase a vehicle specific charger that will give you the power that you need to drive long distances and avoid the expensive expense of home charging.

One thing to keep in mind about electric vehicles is that they are considered a zero emission vehicle, which means that emissions from their tailpipe are not counted in the EPA’s emissions calculator. Many scientists are studying the potential environmental benefits of electric vehicles, but until a final decision is made, it appears that we will have to wait for official testing to be done on the emissions of fuel powered vehicles. While it may seem like a waste of money to invest in fuel-efficient technology, the potential savings when it comes to reducing our dependence on foreign oil is well worth it.

The second major cost related factor for owning an electric vehicle is the cost of maintaining the vehicle. A motor for an electric vehicle is much bigger than a motor for a traditional gasoline powered vehicle. This means that there are a larger space and time frame for maintenance and repairs.

There are two primary types of electric vehicles that are currently available on the market: battery powered and plug-in hybrids. Each of these types has its own pros and cons. Battery powered EV’s are a good investment for those who can afford them, as they will save you money on fueling costs over the long term. They have lower starting prices and are generally faster and more comfortable than their gasoline counterparts.

Plug-in hybrids are not as popular as the battery powered models, but they are definitely the best option for anyone looking to purchase an electric vehicle. Plug-in hybrids offer the same benefits that fuel powered cars offer, such as limited driving distance, acceleration, braking, and highway mileage. The biggest drawback to plug-in hybrids is the relatively high cost of the batteries, and limited range. They will not help you to reach important destinations like your destination in the city or to run errands, as well. However, they do have the advantage of being able to recharge at any location with an electrical outlet. So you can use them in place of petrol for day-to-day commutes, and for longer road trips.
