An EV is an acronym for an electric powered vehicle. An EV is a vehicle that runs solely on electric energy. As compared to an internal combustion engine powered vehicles, electric vehicle batteries have about 99% less moving parts that require regular maintenance. Although there are many different makes and models available in the EV segment, the most common are Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, and Nissan Leaf.
As electricity is used to power the motor, all electric vehicles, including motorcycles, must be equipped with an emergency system to cope with the sudden loss of electricity. Many utility companies offer protection against the risk of a power outage for their residential customers through their own utility company’s grid intertied system. These utilities can provide protection against spikes in electricity as well as blackouts caused by storms and other weather related events. Many electric vehicles come equipped with systems to automatically shut down the engine when the voltage goes to low levels. In this way, drivers can continue to use their cars.
As mentioned above, there are several environmental benefits of using electric vehicles. The biggest benefit is the lower emission of pollutants into the atmosphere. Many electric vehicles run purely on batteries and do not burn gasoline for their power source. This is one of the main reasons why they are much more cost-efficient when compared to standard internal combustion engines powered vehicles.
Although it may seem that the overall fuel economy for electric vehicles is less than for gas guzzlers like internal combustion engines, they actually have similar fuel consumption to gasoline. They consume about the same amount of gasoline. But because they run on electricity, their efficiency increases. Because of this, an EV will consume less gasoline than a comparable gasoline powered vehicle.
The biggest disadvantage to EV’s, however, are their dependence on the electricity grid. Electric vehicles rely on the electric grid to supply the power it needs to operate. If the electric grid were to shut down, so would the ability to power the motor of the car. As you can imagine, this could create a serious issue if there is a failure in the electrical infrastructure of the country.
There are some good points, however. One of the benefits is that the cost of fuel is considerably lower for electric vehicles than their traditional gas counterparts. If you take an east-west highway, you will notice the speed bumps all over the place. This is because the motorizing vehicle needs to travel at higher speeds to cover the wide width of the highway.
In addition to the lower costs associated with fuel, electric vehicles also tend to be better at generating power without emissions. As previously stated, they rely on electricity for their power source. So, they create no pollution as a result of the exhaust they produce. The lack of emissions is another reason why EV’s are becoming more popular among environmental advocates. They are a greener alternative to gas-powered vehicles and also offer a way to travel long distances on relatively little fuel.
So, while it is true that electric vehicles do have some advantages over their gas-powered competitors, they also have some disadvantages. For one, they do rely on the electric grid for their power, which makes them reliant on the stability of the electrical grid. Also, they do emit some pollution because of the emissions from the electric motors and battery pack. However, these problems may soon be overcome as the use of advanced technology improves to tap the power of batteries and other battery technologies.
Although battery technology is still fairly young, the battery packs that powers the electric motors in EV’s is improving by the day. Currently, they have about half the capacity of gas cells. Also, the energy efficiency of current EV’s is improving, making them more economical to operate over time. Furthermore, recent advances in the manufacture of chips for controlling electric motors have made it possible for modern day cars to work on electricity rather than gasoline, therefore, making it more likely that electric vehicles work longer distances.
Another advantage of an EV over traditional gas-powered vehicle is the possibility of power outages. Gasoline powered vehicles require a level of storage capacity so that when the gas tanks run dry, they can still provide adequate power for driving. But, since an electric vehicle uses a chargeable battery to power its motor, it is only necessary to have an available charge in the batteries to power the motor when the battery is empty.
On a final note, many believe that EV’s will not have a place in the current marketplace because they will be too expensive. However, this is simply a misconception. Today, the price of gasoline is very high and future projections do not look good for the future. Therefore, investing in electric vehicles today makes good business sense for car manufacturers as well as consumers.
