Electric Vehicles Powering Electric City Vehicles
EVs are powered by rechargeable batteries that free them from dependence on fossil fuels. The battery packs are also lighter, making the vehicles more efficient than their gasoline-powered counterparts. The Nissan Leaf’s 208 mile driving range is more than enough to get you around town without ever having to stop for gas.
On a good day, when the wind blows from Vaughn Moser’s hayfield in this rural New York village and power lines carrying renewable energy from upstate are not clogged with another heat wave, this carbon-free electricity flows down to New York City, where some of it is used to juice up a fleet of sleek cars that aim to leave internal combustion engines behind. But even on a good day, the electric grid is not ready for what could be 26 million EVs in the future.
The big car manufacturers have big plans for EVs, including the ability to drive them in self-driving mode in a few years. But smaller companies like Wink Motors have a different plan: affordable, small neighborhood electric vehicles that would be popular in urban areas because they can park anywhere and meet low-speed vehicle (LSV) regulations.
As a city, Seattle is taking steps to prepare for the influx of electric vehicles, including expanding access to charging. EV owners can use Level 1 chargers that plug directly into a standard 120-volt outlet at home, or invest in Level 2 chargers that work on the same power system as a laundry dryer or electric oven (also called 240-volt charging). In addition to a growing network of public charging stations, Seattle offers incentives to encourage EV adoption and provides tips for installing residential chargers.
