In the early 1900s, electric cars swept the nation. They were quiet, easy to drive, and emitted little pollution. They became popular with urban residents, especially women.
But in the 1920s, cheap gasoline and improvements in internal combustion engines hampered demand for electric vehicles. Ultimately, the market collapsed.
Today, EVs remain a critical part of the transition to carbon neutrality. In New York City, for example, transportation is responsible for almost 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing the number of EVs in NYC is critical to meet the city’s ambitious climate goals, which include reducing GHG emissions 80% by 2050.
Electric vehicles are also much more energy efficient than traditional vehicles, with higher MPGe ratings than comparable gas-powered models. These MPGe numbers are a useful way to compare different vehicles and determine if an EV is right for you, your lifestyle, and driving habits.
In addition, many cities offer incentives to encourage drivers to switch to EVs. These can range from grants for EV charging stations to free or priority parking bays. Some state governments are also offering rebates to incentivize the sale of EVs.
