Electric Vehicles (EVs) – Charge Your Car Off-Peak
EVs use electric motors and rechargeable batteries to free your drive from fossil fuels. You can charge your car overnight at home, at work or at a growing number of public charging stations.
Several businesses and organizations are committing to accelerate the adoption of EVs in their fleets or communities. Amazon is introducing hundreds of new electric delivery vehicles, and is aiming for a total of 100,000. Trane Technologies, a leader in energy efficiency for homes and business, is making all its fleet of service vans and trucks electric by 2023. Cirba Solutions, a battery materials and management company, is pledging to process end-of-life EV batteries and Gigafactory manufacturing scrap into critical battery components for 1 million EVs by 2028. And Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company owned by Google parent Alphabet, is deploying its all-electric Jaguar I-PACE across its ride-hailing service territory this spring.
But even with these commitments, the nation’s electric grid is a long way from being prepared to handle an onslaught of plug-in cars. Consider a typical weeknight in a city at around 6:00, when many people get home, turn on the air conditioning, run their ovens and microwaves and plug in their electric vehicle for a charge. If everybody does this at the same time, the system could overload or force utilities to produce more power than they’re capable of delivering. To avoid this, EV owners should try to charge their cars during off-peak hours.
