Electric City Vehicles Power the City
EVs are ideal for urban environments like New York City. The dinky supermini hatchbacks, with their near-silence and zippy accelerator response, are a natural fit for built up, tight spaces. And they emit no emissions at the point of use, making them an ally in combating climate change and air pollution. Plus, they’re often cheaper to run and sleeker than their combustion-engined counterparts.
In addition to saving on fuel costs, electric vehicles can save you money on maintenance and repairs. The fewer moving parts in an EV mean a lower risk of breakdowns and a longer lifespan than traditional cars, which means less need for routine service such as tune-ups and oil changes.
But choosing the right car for your needs can be a daunting task, especially if you’re new to electric vehicles. There are a lot of factors to consider: figuring out where and how you’ll charge, finding a reliable local service network, and deciding whether or not you can afford the upfront price tag.
Fortunately, the City is taking steps to make it easier for drivers to go all-electric. We’re partnering with national and regional companies to install EV charging stations at hundreds of locations across the five boroughs, including Walmart and Sam’s Club stores. And we’re expanding our city-operated fast-charging network and equipping 20 percent of city-owned public parking lots and garages with Level 2 chargers by 2025, with a goal of 40 percent by 2030.
